How does it work?

You can customize your plan-sharing preference for every email address you have connected to TripIt. When sharing with SAP Concur is turned on, all plans added to TripIt from that email address will be shared automatically. If you prefer plans not to be shared with SAP Concur, you can turn automatic sharing off within your email settings.  

For example, for business travel, you can set your preference for plans associated with your work email address to automatically share with SAP Concur. Conversely, for personal travel, you can turn off automatic sharing with SAP Concur for plans associated with your personal email address, and those plans will not be automatically shared. 

You can also edit individual trips to choose whether they are shared with SAP Concur, regardless of your email setting.

How do I change my settings?

In the app, tap on the Account tab, then scroll down to Email Addresses. Select the email you want to change the setting for, and you’ll see the toggle, Share Plans with SAP Concur. Then, simply slide the toggle to meet your plan-sharing preference. 

Sharing with SAP Concur is the default setting for any email addresses you have connected to TripIt. You can change your plan-sharing preference within email settings at any time. 

Pro tip: While you’re adjusting settings, consider turning on Inbox Sync to automatically add plans from your email inbox to TripIt.

City break (noun): a short holiday spent in a city, such as when on business travel.

Before there was bleisure travel, there was the city break—the short space of leisure time that grants you access to the cultural and culinary amenities that big cities offer. In this series from TripIt, we explore some of the world’s best cities for planning a quick getaway or extending a work trip.

Here are our tips for making the most of your city break in Park City.

Where to fly in

The nearest airport to Park City is Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), located about 40 minutes away in Salt Lake City. 

Once on the ground at SLC, travelers can hail a ride share, such as Uber or Lyft, to make their way to Park City. 

If you rented a car from one of the many on-airport rental car agencies, travelers can head straight to the rental car center. Simply follow the signs to the skywalk to find the rental car counters located in the parking garage lobby. 

Where to stay during your city break

There are a few considerations to think through when it comes to where to stay during your city break. First, time of year; and second, what you hope to get out of your trip. 

For instance, if you’re planning to visit during the winter and ski or snowboard the majority of your trip (but also head to a nice dinner or two)—you likely want to stay at a mountain resort, such as Montage Deer Valley, Waldorf Astoria Park City, The St. Regis Deer Valley, or The Chateaux Deer Valley.

Alternatively, if you’re planning to visit in early fall, and intend to art gallery-hop and shop on Main Street, but maybe go on a hike or two (more on what to do, below)—you likely want to stay in downtown Park City at a vacation rental, a hotel like Marriot’s MountainSide, or the condos at Silver King. 

Of course, there’s Park City Mountain with its own Mountain Village—located right in downtown Park City—which is part of what makes this destination so unique.

My advice? Choose the option that allows you to experience Park City in a way that aligns with your travel style—and trip priorities. 

How to get around 

While you may be able to take an Uber or Lyft from SLC airport to Park City, ride share services aren’t reliable modes of transport once you’re in Park City—especially if you’re staying at a resort just outside of town. 

Your best, but perhaps more costly, option is to rent a car for the duration of your trip. Renting a car allows you the freedom to explore at your own leisure, without the worry of wondering how or when you’ll get to your next stop. (Just brush up on your winter-weather driving skills ahead of time, if needed!)

Another reliable solution is to book a private car service, such as Daytrips Transportation or Canyon Transportation. 

If you’re staying at one of the mountain resorts, check with the concierge desk to see if the resort offers a free shuttle. Many offer a regular service to and from Park City (and perhaps the airport, as well). 

Thankfully, Park City itself is a very walkable city. You can also rent eBikes through Summit Bike Share (seasonal availability); each bike has a rental fee of $3.00 (for 30 minutes), plus $.15/hour after that. 

There’s also a free Historic Main Street Trolley that runs Wednesdays to Saturdays. 

Pro tip: Use TripIt’s Navigator feature to search transportation options available to you. It will show you the estimated costs and travel times for each option, so you can decide which works best. Where to eat

After a great day of skiing (or shopping), you’re ready to experience the best of Park City’s fine dining establishments. Well, the good news is that you’re spoiled for choice. Spots like Firewood, Riverhorse, and Fletcher’s—all located on Main Street—have something special to offer.  

Just be sure to make reservations for dinner as, even in the off-season, downtown restaurants tend to have long wait times. 

Looking for something more casual for lunch? Head to 501 on Main, No Name Saloon, or The Spur Bar & Grill for American fare. Or, check out Yuki Yama for some of the best sushi this side of the Pacific. 

What to do on your city break 

If you’re headed to Park City during ski season, you’re in for some of the best alpine skiing the country has to offer. Choose from two world-class ski resorts, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain, or Woodward Park City—a state-of-the-art action sports hub. 

In the non-snowy season (late spring to early fall), many of the resorts have excellent hiking and mountain biking trails that make for an adventurous day out. If you’re staying at one of the resorts, check with concierge or the on-site outfitter team to get expert advice on where to hike/bike based on your experience level. 

Never hiked or biked before? Many of the area resorts offer guided experiences to make sure you feel confident and safe your first time on the trails. 

A rail trail more your speed? Check out Park City’s Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail. Hint: here’s where you can really take those eBikes for a spin. White Pine Touring also offers bike rentals and guided tours, if you want a local expert to show you the ropes. 

Back downtown, be sure to check out the many shops and art galleries on Main Street. Love supporting independent bookstores? Same. Head to Dolly’s Bookstore—a Main Street staple since 1972. 

And by night? Head to Old Town Cellars for wine (definitely order a glass of their own), beer, spirits, and light bites. Or, check out Alpine Distilling (on Main Street) to enjoy locally crafted cocktails in a speakeasy-type atmosphere. 

Note: As cities reopen around the world, be sure to consult and adhere to all local guidelines and travel restrictions, as they vary widely and will continue to change. As much of the U.S. approaches some of the coldest weeks of the year, we were curious to see what Americans have planned for the upcoming Presidents’ Day weekend. Is Omicron keeping travelers at home, or is the need for some sunshine driving Americans to hit the road?

TripIt analyzed U.S. origin flight reservations made by our TripIt users for Presidents’ Day weekend and compared the findings to equivalent booking periods in 2021 and 2020.

We found that while airlines will be busier than they were last year (more than 3x as many travelers), the weekend doesn’t appear to be breaking records the way other recent holidays have.

When looking at flight volume for Presidents’ Day weekend 2022, and comparing it to volumes for the same weekend in 2020 (by all accounts, the last majorly traveled holiday weekend before we went into lockdown), flight bookings are about 40 percent of total 2020 volume. 

A few factors explain why holiday weekend travel will not reach the same highs as others in the recent past.

“We know from our recent survey that more than half of all travelers (53 percent) had travel plans impacted by the Delta variant, resulting in canceled and changed plans, loss of money, and likely lots of disappointment,” said Jen Moyse, Sr. Director of Product for TripIt from Concur. “Given the sustained uncertainty around COVID—and the arrival of new variants, in particular—it’s possible that travelers decided that the risk was too great to plan or move forward with a trip in mid-February.”

In addition, Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day have fallen on the same weekend over the past several years—giving travel numbers a boost. But, this year, the holidays fall on separate weekends. 

Thus, while volumes may be down compared to pre-pandemic levels, they are up compared to last year when we were in the thick of our first COVID winter and vaccine rollouts were just beginning.

Warm-weather destinations preside

The top 25 list is full of warm-weather destinations, which is no surprise to those in the throes of winter. Twenty percent of domestic flights are heading to Florida, 14% are heading to California, and 7% will touch down in Texas. However, there are certainly travelers who are eager to embrace winter weather too, with destinations like Denver, Salt Lake City, New York City, Chicago, and Seattle expecting plenty of inbound flights, as well.

As for who is most eager to get a change of scenery? We expect to see the most departures from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) (#1), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) (#2), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) (#3), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (#4), and Denver International Airport (DEN) (#5).

Winter weekend travel tips

Travel during the winter months has always been tricky, not to mention added considerations with COVID-19. Whether for a long weekend or winter getaway, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

1. Flying in the winter months comes with more risk than other times of the year thanks to the potential for weather events. Build buffer time into your trip to allow for these potential hiccups. Consider leaving a day earlier (Wednesday evening instead of Thursday morning for example), and try not to have any important events on your calendar for the day you return should you face delays or cancellations on either end. For your return flight, keep a close eye on the weather. Winter weather could impact your travel to the airport, especially if you’re staying far away. Consider departing for the airport extra early on the day of your flight or staying at a hotel near the airport the night before. 
2. Long weekends can provide just the boost you need between more significant trips, as long as they are done right. Make the most of your time by booking the first flight out in the morning, which is also a good way to avoid the impacts of rolling delays. To avoid coming home to stress, consider staying at a vacation rental with a washing machine so you come home with one less chore to do, and order groceries for delivery online so you return home to a fully loaded fridge.
3. Keep a COVID-19 test close by. Whether traveling internationally (when travelers must take a test no more than one day prior to their return flight to the U.S.), or within the U.S., testing is a good idea, as you certainly don’t want to travel anywhere if you are positive for COVID-19. A TripIt survey from this past fall found that of those who traveled in the past six months, 29% took a COVID-19 test for their trip. Now that tests are even more readily available, and reimbursable through private insurance, we expect that percentage to increase. Schedule an appointment to get tested at a local facility (be sure to schedule in advance) or get some rapid tests to take before you leave and to bring on your trip should you start to feel unwell.
4. Planning your first international trip since the pandemic started? Cheers to adventure! But remember that things have changed a lot in the past two years. Use TripIt to review local infection and vaccination rates, as well as restrictions and regulations at the location. TripIt Pro users can search this information before they book so they can make the best decision for their trip. 
5. Travel costs are up, but there are a few ways to save on an upcoming trip. One option is to set flight alerts or subscribe to airline newsletters to receive notifications of travel deals. Several airlines offer flight deals throughout the year. For flights within the U.S. TripIt Pro monitors for ongoing changes in price and sends you an alert when a potential airline credit or refund may be available.

Love is in the air. This Valentine’s Day, many Americans are planning to heat things up with a warm-weather getaway (okay, there’s let’s-get-cozy-by-the-fire plans, too). 

Here are the top 10 destinations for Valentine’s Day 2022 travel according to reservation data in TripIt, plus some ideas for planning a romantic date in your city of choice. 

10. Salt Lake City, Utah 

Utah’s capital city kicks off the list at number 10. And whether visitors are using the city as a gateway to other destinations in the state or staying put to explore, Salt Lake City continues to crop up on travelers’ radar—and TripIt’s data. 

Date idea: Did you know? SLC’s Log Haven restaurant has been voted as one of the top-10 most romantic restaurants in the country. Oh, you did know? And you booked a reservation for V Day? Well done you. 

By day, check out the Natural History Museum of Utah (if you and your date love nature and history) or the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (ditto, but art). 

9. Miami, Florida 

The first of two Sunshine State destinations on the list, Miami clocks in at number nine on the list. And it’s easy to see why—the 305 is chock-full of beautiful beaches, beautiful hotels, and beautiful people. 

Date idea: By day, laze by the pool at one of Miami’s many boutique (and chic) hotels. By night, head to Nobu Miami for an intimate dinner date; nosh on sushi, sake, and much more. 

8. Cancun, Mexico

The only international destination to make the list, Cancun is no stranger to American tourists. Indeed, the sunny destination consistently ranked as a top international destination during 2021, according to TripIt data. 

Date idea: Beach. Pool. Sun. Siesta. All of the above sound like a divine way to spend your Valentine’s Day. After said siesta, head to one of Cancun’s top restaurants for a romantic meal with your travel companion—check out Le Chique Restaurant for upscale eats or El Socio Naiz Taquería for tacos with a twist.

7. San Diego, California

From the city to the sea, San Diego lures visitors with its year-round sunny disposition. So it comes as little surprise that in mid-February many Americans are headed to this Southern Californian destination. 

Date idea: By day, rent a Pedego electric bike and pedal your way around Balboa Park—a beautiful 1,000-acre park home to museums, botanical gardens, and the San Diego Zoo. By night, head to Kettner Boulevard for a romantic meal at hotspots like Juniper & Ivy, Kettner Exchange, and Herb & Wood.

6. Dallas, Texas

By now, you’ve probably noticed the V Day trend—many Americans are headed to warmer climes for the holiday. Indeed, eight out of 10 destinations are warm-weather (if not downright tropical) locations. And Dallas is no exception. 

Date idea: Plan a day hike; the city has loads of trails (check out some ideas here). Then, head to dinner at José (for Mexican cuisine), Sachet (for Mediterranean), or Uchiba (for Japanese). 

5. Los Angeles, California 

If it’s your Valentine’s Day wish to mix and mingle with the stars, Los Angeles is the city to visit. But that’s not all this star-studded city has to offer. From waterfront restaurants to day hikes with picturesque views, LA is ideal for a romantic weekend away. 

Date idea: Head to the Getty Museum—admission is free, but pre-booked entry is required (nothing says romance like planning ahead—hint, hint!). Afterwards, head to dinner at Pasjoli (for French cuisine), Damian (for Mexican), or Angelini Osteria (for Italian). 

4. Denver, Colorado

It’s not all sunshine and beach days for Americans, though. Some are embracing cold-weather destinations in mid-February and all the perks that come with them (see also: Salt Lake City)—like winter sports, après-ski, and like-minded tourists. And that’s precisely what’s landed Denver at spot number four. 

Date idea: Check out one (or a few!) of Denver’s many breweries by day. And by night? Choose from hotspots like Three Saints Revival (for tapas), YumCha (for dumplings and noodles), or Apple Blossom (for seasonal, American fare). 

3. Las Vegas, Nevada 

From world-class spas to pool parties, blackjack tables to rounds of golf, there’s something for everyone in Las Vegas—whether you’re coupled up or flying solo. That’s what makes a Valentine’s Day trip to Vegas a win-win. (SWIDT?)

Date idea: Two words: Spa day. Then, follow it up with dinner at Buddy V’s Ristorante in The Venetian and cap the evening off with a gondola ride down the Grand Canal.

2. Phoenix, Arizona

Swooning over saguaros? Same. And so are many Americans—apparently—as Phoenix clocks in at the number two destination for Valentine’s Day. 

Date idea: By day, check out the Desert Botanical Garden and its new Chihuly in the Desert exhibition. By night, head to aptly named Valentine (if you’re in town over the weekend) or Belly Kitchen & Bar for swanky drinks and creative eats. 

1. Orlando, Florida

This Valentine’s Day, Orlando is the top destination for U.S. travelers. Between the warmth, sunshine, world-renowned theme parks, and overall magical vibe, it’s easy to see why so many plan to spend the most romantic day of the year in Orlando. (It’s a top destination for getting engaged and married, too!)

Date idea: Head to the Orlando Museum of Art to check out the new Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition, followed by dinner at Knife & Spoon.
